what's coming up?

The spring is always a very busy time of year in the library.  We have Black History Month in February, Women's History Month in March and National Poetry Month in April.  We'll celebrate each of these months with special displays and events, so keep your eyes open.

I'm not much of a manicure person myself, but if I were, I might be tempted to get my nails done like the ones at the link below.  Yup, you guessed it -- manicures done literary style.  Take a look to see what the true Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter fan can do to proclaim their loyalty with their hands (once again, thanks, Flavorwire).

got some glasses?

In the "I can't believe that" category we have  books written on rice.  Yes, I said rice.  As in small grains of the white stuff you eat.  Entire chapters or books have been written on individual grains of rice.  Take a look at this link to see how that looks.  Watch the eye strain -- but think of how portable these books would be.

The ballots were cast and counted and this year's winner of the Calif.Young Reader Medal award goes to . . . (drum roll, please), The Hunger Games  by Suzanne Collins. No real suprise there.  That book went in and out of the library so much it needed it's own revolving door.  If you haven't read it yet, you really need to.  But now it's time to take on this year's nominees.  Below are the three titles that will be contending for the medal next year. Come and get 'em in the library.

p.a.w.s - back in the library

PAWS Period is back!
While we anticipate some changes in how PAWS will be implemented this year, we expect to continue to be THE place for studying and reading for those students needing us.
In addition to Ms. Zdybel being on hand to answer questions and help students out, there will also be other teachers in the library during PAWS to lend their expertise.
What CAN you do in the library during PAWS?

See the sidebar to the right!
What CAN'T you do in the library during PAWS?
Well, we're not open for socializing, checking your email or cruising the Internet.  It's all about achieving academically and finding success.  We'd love to help you do that.
Library PAWS Tutorial
The library may be used during PAWS to:
*Work on homework from any class
*Write papers or study
*Read SSR books
*Complete academic research for a class

All students must be seated with study materials during PAWS.

who's running this joint, anyway?

This is my sixth year at the helm of the RHS library, but I've been a Tiger since 1987 when I started my career here as an English teacher.  I'm a mom to a 17 year old son and a 14 year old daughter, which means I am mostly an ATM in my spare time.  The family menagerie includes a dog, a cat and a frog.  The thing I like to do most  (besides read a really good book, duh) is travel and it's my goal in the next ten years to add stamps to my passport before it expires.  I dabble in photography, tinker on the piano and have given up completely on gardening.

Like Dorothy, I blew out of Kansas a long time ago after marrying the first guy from California I'd ever met and graduating from KU. In 1986, when our 2 kids were young, I started working at part-time positions for various schools. I became a Tiger (although still a Jayhawk at heart) in 2003 after our son graduated from Woodcreek HS, our daughter from RHS, and both headed off to college. In my spare time I like vacationing at beaches and reading mysteries (simultaneously, if possible).
